Apologies to those of you who only want to read my thoughts on sailing, but once again, and only for the second time since I started this Substack, a certain White House Man has angered me by interfering with the World Cup again. And heaven forbid someone messing with my no 1 passion, football. Yes WHM, its football not soccer and you know nothing about it. This is my game, one I started watching at Old Trafford, Manchester on my father’s shoulders in 1960 and have been in love with it ever since. It belongs to me and billions of others who view it with a passion that you cannot possibly understand except your fixation with money for yourself, family and sycophants. You and your peace-prize giving mate Infantilino will never understand this. Stick to screwing the fans who have visited your country to watch and travel around while you ensure you and FIFA make even more money.
I am writing this the day after an epic victory for England at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City against the Mexican team of true warriors. They understand football and love it with a passion. They wouldn’t pressure the organisers ( who are FIFA, not the US) to change a decision; they have too much respect for our game and its traditions. The US team is a good one with a great manager, but if they beat Belgium you will have devalued that victory and the whole tournament. Once again, instead of raising the profile of the US in a positive way, you have achieved the opposite. But you don’t see it and never will.
Back to sailing, I am pleased that while WHM is in power the America’s Cup stays away from the US as the last thing our great sport needs is political interference. To my American friends, I apologise for my rant. I know many of you aren’t WHM supporters, and I promise to get back to the AC, Sail GP, etc very soon.
Finally, in the words of the legendary Sir Ben Ainslie, “ you do not want to make me angry”. Well I am, but unlike Ben, I cannot make any difference, apart from my writing rant. Enjoy the rest of the World Cup, which inspite of all that I have said will prove truly memorable.
